Calling an SOS of the Heart [For Remy LeBeau]
[Continuing from the TFLN that started with SOS. It's like a mistletoe minefield here.]
She should never have listened to Jubilee. 'Come on, Rogue, it'll be fun,' she'd said. 'We'll get dressed up and party the night away.' Much as she loved her eccentric friend, she felt like wringing her adorably eccentric neck for the way she'd been abandoned for the first hunky guy who crossed their path.
Looking back at the string of texts to Remy, she couldn't believe she'd actually sent them. It had been a desperate cry for help, that was for certain - he was one of the few at the mansion who would care and manage to stage a rescue without bloodshed, unlike Logan or Piotr. The whole thing was so silly though; she was an X-Man and a strong, independent woman who shouldn't need a guy to save her, but that was exactly what she needed. Backed into a corner behind a table covered in holiday treats and a bowl filled with more rum than punch, it was the only place devoid of mistletoe and city officials with wandering hands that could get them both into trouble.
Because she'd also listened to Jubilee's wardrobe advice for this disastrous holiday party. The sleeveless evergreen dress had a much lower cut than she usually preferred, and the long white gloves still left a stretch of skin bared along her upper arm. Normally it wouldn't be a problem, but people were beginning to stumble all over each other, and the last thing she wanted was to have another drunken idiot stuck in her head.
So she waited. And hoped that she wasn't making a huge mistake.

That was how he had ended up in a borrowed suit from Scott's closet - Cyclopes' car keys just happened to be in the jacket's pocket - and walking confidently into the function room at City Hall, uncovered red and black eyes scanned the heavy throng of people for his river mouse in distress and couldn't stop from staring at Rogue for a seconds longer than normal before skillfully walking through towards the gorgeously dressed woman.
"Did ya call for a rescue, ma belle river mouse?"

Wow.
"Remy, you..." He didn't even have to try and he had her all sorts of flustered, which was blatantly apparent when she failed to use her own nickname for him. She cleared her throat and lifted a hand to smooth over her carefully curled hair. Play it cool, that's all she had to do. "Well, don't you clean up nice. I almost didn't recognize you in that getup."
She'd recognize those eyes anywhere though. It was so like him to have left them uncovered for everyone to see, openly marking himself as a mutant. Luckily for them both, everyone here was far too inebriated to both notice his unusual eyes and actually remember them in the morning.

As he spoke, Remy unbuttoned and removed his jacket, placing the car keys in a pocket of his pants to carefully drape the piece of clothing over Rogue's bare shoulders before cheekily and quickly kissing some of her curled hair.

She was about to thank him for the jacket, which was warm and smelled faintly of him, but then he had to go and kiss her and both ruin and make the moment. Choosing to react to the former, she none too gently smacked his chest with the back of her gloved hand. "Keep those lips to yourself, swamp rat," she ordered, though the effect was lessened when she couldn't hold back the beginnings of a smile. Because it had been sweet, and he'd been smart about it, staying well away from her skin.

He spotted the small smile but didn't make comment to it as it would have vanished just as quickly as it had appeared if he do so and seeing Rogue smile so genuinely was such a rare thing, something that Remy strives to make happen everyday.

It felt good to smile, to have a reason for it. Her life wasn't the worst there ever was, but nothing had been quite the same in the years since her mutation manifested. There was always a dark cloud hanging over her as she worried about hurting the people she'd come to care for, especially those who were close enough for her to call family. It was hard to be carefree and happy when a little sleep could mean life or death for one of her friends, or worse yet one of the children.

"Shall we leave and take Scott's car for a proper spin?"
no subject
She let him lead her, but didn't miss that drop of information. "Scott's car, huh? I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess he doesn't know you're borrowing it right now." It wouldn't be the first time, Remy was as bad as Logan on that front.
Wait a second. Glancing down at the jacket around her shoulders, and then to the rest of the suit he was wearing, her jaw dropped. "This is his suit, too, isn't it?" She didn't know whether to be outraged or amused by this latest antic. "I thought I recognized it. You're awful, ya know that?" Okay, she was apparently settling on amused because a laugh was bubbling out of her even as she shook her head at him.

The Cajun chuckled at Rogue's shocked look once she finally realized what he was wearing before he allowed the sound of her laughter to wash over him, it was a wonderful sound that was just as rare as seeing her smile. "Ain't Remy's fault dat all his fancy suits are still stuck in N'awlins and he hadta borrow one from someone else ta get inta dis place."

She was about to make another remark about how their fearless leader might retaliate for this latest incursion when one of the other partygoers decided to stumble into her, and she had to grab hold of Remy and hang on for dear life to stay upright.
no subject
"Ya okay, cher?" Remy asked with genuine concern in his tone while loosening his grip on her slightly, knowing that she would want free of his hold as quickly as possible. "There was no skin ta skin contact, was dere?"
no subject
Because the most jarring thing about the whole experience? It wasn't the fear of accidently brushing up against the man's skin and hurting him. It was the safety she felt in Remy's arms, the instinctual knowledge that he would protect her - and that some part of her wanted that more than anything.
When she did step back after a few long moments, her hands lingered on his arms, trailing down them until she realized what she was doing and fully pulled away. "Let's get outta here," she said distractedly, pulling the suit jacket tighter around herself as she started to make her way through the crowd again.

"Oui, lets go somewhere with proper food." Gambit suggested as he had a feeling she hadn't dared eat or drink anything. "You wanna drive, belle?"

They were almost to those oversized ornate doors when a path miraculously opened up, a straight line of sight to freedom. "Come on!" She reached over to grab his hand and tugged him forward to squeeze through the tunnel of people. There were so many in the room, she was certain it had to be a violation of fire safety codes. And in city hall, of all places.
no subject
Remy tightly took hold of her gloved hand as she grabbed onto his own, freedom was in sight and they weren't about to let a chance like that pass them by, not when they were so close to leaving the mistletoe minefield for the fresh air and the promised food.

"Lead the way, sir knight."
