Coffee was the lifeblood of medical professionals, especially those who worked in the ER. The long hours coupled with endless stress meant they were either all caffeine addicts or alcoholics. Sometimes both. Elena leaned toward the former these days, thankfully, and despite having a well-used machine at home and frequenting the stations at the hospital, she still found herself in that coffee shop at least once a day, even on her days off. It was just too much hassle to make the espresso herself at home, and she had a weakness for vanilla lattes.
Unfortunately, that delicious weakness was her downfall whenever she bumped into someone. Like now, when the steaming hot liquid sloshed out of the top of the paper cup and onto her hand, dripping down onto her jeans. "I'm
, I wasn't paying attention," she hurriedly apologized to the man she'd bumped into, her free hand hovering under the cup to catch any remaining droplets before they fell. She still hadn't looked at him yet, but she did so as she asked with genuine concern, "Did I get any on you?"
